Influences of transactional and transformational leadership on social, environmental and operational performance

Abstract

The leadership style of administrators influences the performance of the companies they manage; however, most studies focus on relating it to economic and operational performance, ignoring social and environmental aspects. This study reports a structural equation model that relates transactional and transformational leadership as independent variables to social, operational and environmental performance as dependent variables through six hypotheses to quantify the relationship between these variables. To validate the hypotheses in the model, a questionnaire was designed and applied to managers of production processes in the Mexican maquiladora industry. 156 valid questionnaires were obtained, and the information was entered into SPSS v.24 software for filtering and validation. The model was evaluated using the least squares approach and reports a sensitivity analysis based on conditional probabilities for high and low occurrence scenarios in the variables. The results indicate that transactional and transformational leadership styles positively influence the social, operational and environmental performance of companies. However, transformational leadership has a greater impact than transactional leadership on each of the three types of performance measured, so it is concluded that, due to the nature of the maquiladora industry, it is better to invest resources in developing transformational leaders who have greater vision and inspiration, and who empower, motivate and develop their staff.

Jorge Luis García Alcaraz es profesor de tiempo completo adscrito al Departamento de Ingeniería Industrial de la Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez. Obtuvo una Licenciatura y una Maestría en Ingeniería Industrial en el Instituto Tecnológico de Colima (México), un Doctorado en Ciencias de la Ingeniería Industrial del Instituto Tecnológico de Ciudad Juárez (México), un Doctorado en Innovación en Ingeniería de Producto y Procesos Industriales de la Universidad de La Rioja (España), un Doctorado en Ingeniería y tecnologías industriales por la Universidad Pública de Navarra (España), un Doctorado en Ingeniería Mecánica por la Universidad de La Rioja (España), un Doctorado en Ingeniería y Tecnologías de la Información por la Universidad de Lleida (España)  y un Postdoctorado en Procesos de Fabricación por la Universidad de La Rioja (España). Sus principales áreas de investigación están relacionadas con la toma de decisiones multicriterio aplicada a la manufactura esbelta, el modelado de procesos de producción, el análisis de impacto ambiental, cadena de suministro y sustentabilidad. Es miembro fundador de la Sociedad Mexicana de Investigación Operativa y miembro activo de la Academia Mexicana de Ingeniería Industrial. Actualmente. El Dr. García es Investigador Nacional nivel III reconocido por el Consejo Nacional de Humanidades, Ciencia y Tecnología de México (CONACYT) desde enero de 2020 y colabora con grupos de investigación de México, España, Colombia, China, Estados Unidos de America, Irán, Egipto, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, India, Portugal, Arabia Saudita, Túnez, Turquía, Brasil, Chile, Finlandia, Francia, Iraq, por mencionar solo algunos.  El Dr. García es autor/coautor de alrededor de 323 documentos indexados en Scopus, 33 conferencias y congresos internacionales, y ha sido autor/editor de 19 libros por editoriales internacionales como Springer, CRC publishing, entre otros.
